SENIORS – IUSB Admissions will be here on February 13th from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for on-site admissions.  Fill out the application beforehand, have your application fee waived, get an admissions decision THAT DAY and have a chance to win a $500 scholarship all in FIFTEEN MINUTES!  Come to Guidance to sign up for an appointment time slot.

IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week:  Alabama won the national championship in college football this past week, but the real story is about the two quarterbacks, Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa, and how they worked together to make it happen.  Hurts, who led Alabama to the final game as a freshman last season, and who has only lost two games as a two-year starter, was replaced at halftime (not because of injury) by the seldom used Tagovailoa.  To see Jalen Hurts on the sideline, still engaged and pulling for his team and his backup quarterback, was the inspirational story of the game.  Hurts didn’t pout, he didn’t sulk and he didn’t hang his head.  What he did was support his replacement, encouraged his teammates, and stayed engaged in the game.  Years from now Alabama fans will still be talking about the tremendous second half rally led by Tua Tagovailoa.  However, I will never forget seeing a star player standing on the sidelines, being replaced in the biggest game of the year, and how he responded with class, grace and humility!

The Laura A. Kindig Seminary Trust scholarship application is now available in the Guidance Office.  You must be majoring in nursing or medical related fields to apply.  Please see Guidance for more information.

Merit on the Move will take place again this semester starting Wednesday, February 21st.  To sign up, please contact Mr. Wolf and your guidance counselor.   Spots fill up quickly, so sign up NOW!

The Purdue Club of Elkhart County Foundation Scholarship is now available in the guidance office.  Requirements are that you enter Purdue University as a full time student in the fall of 2018.  The application can be found on line at www.purduealumni.org/elkhart or you can pick up a paper copy in the guidance office.  The deadline is March 1st.

Are you an upperclassman who enjoys reading and competition?  Do you want an academic extracurricular to make your college applications more competitive?  Talk to Mr. Caskey about joining the English Academic Super Bowl team!  This year’s theme is World War I and we’re reading a short, classic Hemingway novel, “A Farewell to Arms.”  There are minimal after school commitments and low pressure.  It’s nothing but fun!

REMINDER:  Students who bring athletic equipment or winter guard equipment like drill rifles, tennis racquets, golf clubs, or baseball/softball bats, are required to leave them in their cars.  If they do not have a vehicle in which to store them during the school day, they are welcome to bring them into the building, but must drop them off in their coach’s class, the athletic office, or the music/band offices.  Thanks for your cooperation for keeping these implements out of the GHS hallways.

The winter dance is TOMORROW from 9:30-11:30 p.m. in Whiteman gym.  It is semi-formal, so please dress-up.  The tickets will be sold during lunch for $5 this week.  The DJ is taking song requests and plans on playing music from all different cultures!

Power tools, sound/light boards, costumes, makeup, hair, or set construction; sound interesting?!  Then working behind the scenes for this year’s musical “Tarzan” is the exact place for you!  If you are interested in putting your creativity to good use then please email Ms. O’Leary (koleary@goshenschools.org) or add your name to the sign-up sheet located on the choir room door.  Ms. O’Leary will be in touch.

Attention all potential football players…..Off-Season workouts will begin on Monday, January 22nd at 3:50 p.m. in the weight room.  We will have workouts on Mondays (weight room), Tuesdays (warehouse) and Thursdays (warehouse).  If you are planning on playing football and you are not in a winter sport, you should plan to attend.  We will work out and be done before 5:00 p.m.  If you are new to the program, you must have a physical on file in order to workout.  See Coach Park with questions.

Boys soccer open play will be on Monday nights for the month of January and February.  This is open to all students who are interested in playing soccer.  You need to have a physical on file in the athletic office in order to be able to participate.

The GHS girls and boys swim team will host a fundraiser at Culver’s in Goshen on January 22nd from 5:00-8:00 p.m.  Part of the proceeds will go to benefit the Goshen swim and dive program.  Players will deliver your food and clear your table.  Come and support your RedHawk swim and dive team!

REMINDER:  YOU MUST BE STAYING AFTER SCHOOL FOR SOMETHING TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS – The GHS cafeteria is offering free after school snacks every day after school.  This program is for any student who is staying after school.  All student-athletes, club members, music participants, drama participants, after school homework help kids, etc. are strongly encouraged to stop by the cafeteria after school and take advantage of this generous opportunity.  Students just need to show their ID and they can grab a healthy snack to go that will hold them over during their after school activities until dinner.  The cafeteria will stay open until 3:55 p.m. to hand out the snacks.  All students picking up the healthy snack after school will need to eat their snack in the cafeteria.  We appreciate your cooperation with this adjustment that is mandated by the state of Indiana in order to continue this program.

If you are a student that leaves the building at any time during normal school hours then you must have a sticker on your ID if it’s for a class (PACT, Building Trades, EACC, Merit, shortened schedules, Red Zone, internship, etc.) that indicates that or a blue pass from the office indicating that you have permission to leave.  Building Trades, EACC and Red Zone students are also required to sign out at the Welcome Center before leaving.

Winter coats are here courtesy of the United Way and Goshen Community Schools Winter Coat Give-Away!  If you need a coat for the winter or know someone who does, stop by the Goshen Schools Administration Building at 613 E. Purl St. from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday-Friday.  If you are unable to come during those times, call 971-4149 to arrange a time.

Homework help is available every Tuesday and Thursday in the media center from 3:45-5:00 p.m.  A bus will be available around 5:10 p.m. (5:20 p.m. on Tuesdays) if you need a ride home.  It will pick you up at the south end of circle drive by the flag pole.  This is a great opportunity if you just need a little extra time or even just a quiet place to do your homework at the end of the day.

ATTENTION ALL SRT CLASSES:  We will have a competition between all of the SRT’s to see who can collect the most bottle caps.  There will be bins in each SRT classroom and the caps will be collected every week. The winning SRT with the most caps will get HOMEMADE CINNAMON ROLLS or a PIZZA PARTY!  The competition will end before Spring Break.  If we collect 400 pounds as a school, we will be able to recycle them into a park bench.  Don’t miss out on this opportunity to save the environment and win a prize!  If you would like to collect or sort caps during SRT contact Mrs. Swihart in room 2200 or email her at cswihart@staff.goshenschools.org.  It will count for NHS volunteer hours and it looks great on college applications!
