GHS Announcements for April 22, 2021
Summer School Registration is open now until May 14th. All summer classes will be offered in-person either at GHS or Merit Learning Center. There will be on APEX and teacher-led courses available, as well as PE. There will be no options to complete classes virtually from home.
Students interested in completing a class this summer should contact their counselor to get more information or follow the steps on the 2021 GHS/Merit Summer School information page to get access to the Summer School Enrollment form.
We are adding another night of tutoring after school. In addition to Tuesday and Thursday nights, we will now be offering help on Wednesdays. So now students can get tutoring on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights from 3:45-5:00 in the cafeteria. A snack and transportation home (within the district) will be provided.
Cap and gown delivery is scheduled for Tuesday, May 11th. Jostens will be here for both sessions of SRT, so if a student is assigned one session, they should go to pick up materials at the beginning of the other session. For students who are not assigned, SRTS should go down to the athletic concession area at the following time:

*** ROA students can come anytime during SRT. If you are unable to make it during that time, Mrs. Clark will have the leftovers.
It is time for the annual GHS Prom Dress Drive. The purpose of this drive is to provide free dresses for students who want to go to the prom but may be in financial need. We have several dresses in various styles and sizes to choose from. If you are in need of a prom dress or if you wish to donate a gently used dress, please contact Mrs. Hershberger in Room 3260 (rrhershberger@staff.goshenschools.org) or Mrs. Shakley in Room 2255 (tshakley@staff.goshenschools.org). You may also email or ask one of your teachers to help you get in contact with one of us.
SPORTS:
Spring sports have started and the fan attendance plan is by venue. At track & field at Foreman Field, tennis, golf, JV baseball at the Little League and V/JV softball at Shanklin, there are no capacity limits but all Covid protocols must be followed to attend, including wearing a face covering at all times. For baseball played at Phend Field, we do have to restrict to 4 fans/rostered player.
Boys’ soccer limited contact/skills development for this spring will start today from 7:00-9:00 PM. This is open to any students who is interested in trying out for boys soccer next season. You must have a physical on file in the athletic office to participate. These limited contact/physical development sessions will take place very Monday and Thursday from 7:00-9:00 PM. This will take place at the soccer practice field. And you must have a face mask with you. If you have any questions, please contact one of the coaching staff.
Any boy interested in playing football next fall should attend a call out meeting on Tuesday April 27th during 2nd session of SRT in the main gym. Please bring your laptop and something to write with. We will be gathering information and discussing the spring and summer workouts and competition days.
Girls Soccer has “limited contact” training sessions on Mondays and Wednesday’s from 4:-5:45 starting April 12. Contact coach Myron Bontreger for any questions
LIFEGUARD: This class is for new lifeguards.

LIFEGUARD REVIEW: This class is for CURRENT LIFEGUARDS, who just need recertified. You only need to attend one of the two weekends. Friday night class is from 4:30 – 9:00 PM, and Saturday will be from 8 AM until 2 PM, with a break for lunch between finishing the last set of skills and taking the final test.

ALL Classes may end earlier than projected, but will not go over the stated time. All candidates must be 15 by May 20, and be able to complete the following prerequisite skills:
Swimming | Treading Water | Timed Event |
Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breathing control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl (freestyle), breaststroke, or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Goggles may be used. |
Tread water for 2 minutes, using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under their armpits. |
Complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds: ∙ Start in the water, swim 20 yards (goggles are not allowed) ∙ Surface dive to a depth of 7 – 10 feet to retrieve a 10 lb object. ∙ Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface. ∙ Exit the water without using a ladder or steps. |

The RedHawks baseball JV team were frigid cold at the plate Wednesday night in Warsaw. The RedHawks had only 16 plate appearances, striking out 10 times and earning no base hits. A walk drawn by Damian Castillo was the only time a runner reached base in the five-inning blowout. Jace Hershberger started on the mound as the snow flurries fell, lasting three innings. Myles McLaughlin, Isaac Rodriguez, and David Vela pitched in relief.
The RedHawks JV compete versus Northridge at Goshen Little League at 5pm on Thursday.
The Goshen RedHawks Varaity Softball team fell behind early and couldn’t come back in a 5-1 loss to Warsaw on Wednesday. Klair Sweet, Reghan Yoder, Kareena Ulfig and Tyra Marcum had the 4 hits for the evening. Tyra and Reghan each had a double for Goshen. Liz Ramirez took the loss for Goshen while giving up 4 hits and 4 runs. The RedHawks are now 5-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Goshen will play at Northridge on Thursday for a 5:30 start.
The Goshen Baseball team picked up their first conference win on Wednesday night in snowy conditions. After a postponed game Monday and bad weather in the forecast, the RedHawks traveled to Warsaw and picked up a 5-0 win to improve to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in the Northern Lakes Conference.
Reece Fisher took the mound for the RedHawks and picked up his 3rd win on the young season. He struck out 9 Tigers and allowed 0 runs and only 4 hits while surrendering only 1 walk.
Sophomore Noah Alford got the RedHawks on the board in the 2nd inning on a double to right field that scored 2 runs. Along with Alford, the RedHawks scattered 9 hits in the game. Ezequiel Moreno, Noah Meikle and Noah Alford all had multiple hits in the game to lead the offense. Thomas Castillo also provided an RBI and a stolen base. Reece Fisher and Colin Turner each swiped a bag as well.
Thomas Castillo pitched a shutout in the 7th inning to seal the win for the RedHawks. They will turn around and play Northridge in another conference game on Thursday night at Phend Field beginning at 5pm.
