HAVE A SAFE AND WONDERFUL SPRING BREAK!
Don’t forget to check out a book from the learning commons to read over spring break! Or, if you prefer, check out a digital book from Sora! Questions? Just ask Mrs. Hartzler, Mr. Collins, or Mrs. Collins.
It is time for the annual GHS Prom Dress Drive. The purpose of this drive is to provide free dresses for students who want to go to the prom but may be in financial need. We have several dresses in various styles and sizes to choose from. If you are in need of a prom dress or if you wish to donate a gently used dress, please contact Mrs. Hershberger in Room 3260 (rrhershberger@staff.goshenschools.org) or Mrs. Shakley in Room 2255 (tshakley@staff.goshenschools.org). You may also email or ask one of your teachers to help you get in contact with one of us.
Key Club will be collecting cell phones to recycle for Cincinnati zoo’s Project Saving Species. Cell phones contain lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic. All are considered hazardous waste if sent to landfills. Cell phones also contain an ore called Coltan, which is mined in endangered gorilla habitat in Africa. Reducing the demand for Coltan will help save these animals and their habitat. Please give any unneeded cell phone to any key club member or place in collection box at the Welcome Center anytime before April 16.
SPORTS:
Spring sports have started and the fan attendance plan is by venue. At track & field at Foreman Field, tennis, golf, JV baseball at the Little League and V/JV softball at Shanklin, there are no capacity limits but all Covid protocols must be followed to attend, including wearing a face covering at all times. For baseball played at Phend Field, we do have to restrict to 4 fans/rostered player. There is a home game Monday – Thursday next week for baseball, so come see them play. Just check in under one of the players who has not used all 4 of their tickets. For baseball at Phend and track & field, admission cost is $5.
SPORTS RESULTS:
Last night, strong pitching by the Goshen RedHawks Varsity baseball team was once again the key to opening the season 3-0. Mitch Daniels hurled 5 innings of 1 hit baseball surrendering a 1st inning solo homerun and no other hits. The RedHawks went on to win the game by a score of 7-1.
The RedHawks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the 1st inning when Nate Pinarski scored on a Colin Turner sacrifice fly. The RBI by Turner was 1 of 3 RBIs on the night. In the 2nd inning, the RedHawks were able to push another run across on a bunt from Adam Ellison that scored Noah Meikle.
The biggest inning for the RedHawks offense was the 3rd when Colin Turner drove in 2 runs on a double to deep right field. Later in the inning Meikle scored another run on a fielding error. That was all the offense needed to provide. Mitch Daniels pitched 5 innings, giving up 1 run and Jake Turner finished the last 2 innings surrendering 0 runs. Daniels and Turner combined for 11 strikeouts and 1 earned run.
After a busy 1st week the RedHawks will have some time off for spring break. They resume their season on Tuesday April 13 when they travel to Jimtown to take on the Jimmies. That game is scheduled for 5pm in Baugo.
The RedHawks boys baseball JV got into the winner’s column with a 21-10 victory over West Noble, despite being outhit 5-4. RedHawk hitters took advantage of West Noble miscues (including 15 walks, 4 hit batters, and 6 fielding errors) by aggressively running the base paths and stealing eight bases. Gage Worthman and Hayden McDonald each hit a double in the contest. Caelan Miller pitched four solid innings, striking out eight. Drew Elliott and Damian Castillo pitched in relief to finish the game. After earning their first victory, the RedHawks will start Spring Break on a positive note! The JV team returns to action versus Jimtown for a 5pm contest at GHS Phend Field on Tuesday, 4/13. The C-Team will play their first game of the season on the road versus Mishawaka Marian at 5:30pm on Thursday, 4/15.
