To the Goshen Community,

Our community has long thrived on strong partnerships and working together. On Monday, June 10th, the Goshen Fire and Police Departments will work together with Goshen Community Schools to conduct a training drill at Goshen High School. The training is scheduled to begin at approximately 1:00 p.m. and will continue for most of the afternoon. Some Goshen Community Schools staff have volunteered to participate in the drill. This allows Goshen Fire and Police Department to respond to a more realistic scenario. Because of other scenarios in the state of Indiana that have been reported, we want to be clear that no projectiles/plastic pellets will be used during this drill. The well-being and safety of our volunteers will be monitored at all times during the drill.

Additional Goshen Officers and Fire personnel who are not participating in the training will remain on duty during the training exercise, and there will be no lapse in response to calls for service from Goshen residents and businesses.

Signs will be posted along the roadway to alert passersby that training is being conducted at Goshen High School. Please spread the word, as we do not want any misperceptions of why first responders are at the school.

GPD and GFD are constantly training to better serve our community. This training exercise will allow the police and fire departments to train further, while also helping school staff see first-hand what could happen in an emergency. It is our greatest hope that our community never has to utilize what is learned in exercises like this; but there is value in training, and we will be prepared.

2019 Retirees Video

Last week during the annual end of year celebration we were all impressed with a video honoring this year’s retirees made by Brian Sapp, GMTV & GTV teacher. The video showcases our wonderful staff who have given so much of their lives to our schools and highlights the Goshen Middle School choir directed by Marilyn Mason singing their rendition of “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman.

GHS Transportation Requests/Transporte escolar a la preparatoria GHS

Transportation to Goshen High School:

As students transition to Goshen High school, this is a reminder that bussing to and from school for those outside the one mile walk zone must be requested.

All high school students will be required to register with the Transportation Dept. before being allowed to ride.  To ensure your student will be assigned a bus to ride next fall, register by June 15.

Instructions:

  • Register by logging into skyward.goshenschools.org and go to “Online Forms”.
  • Select “Transportation Request Form
  • Complete all required information

Note: If you do not have access to Skyward, you may get help at skyward.goshenschools.org and select “Help – Getting Started”.

Weather concerns for this week

There are many factors that are in play when we make decisions about school delays and closings, and as you might imagine, each weather event is unique and has its own peculiarities. Having said that, we know that many of you wonder about timelines and such for when we are making these decisions. Normally, we decide on delays by 5:45 a.m., as the first buses roll out between that time and 6:00. If there is a delay, we have until 7:45 to decide if we will close school or not, also based on when the first buses would begin their routes. We take making these decisions very seriously, as 6600 young lives depend on us for so many things. For many of our students, we provide their only two nutritious meals a day.

As we are looking at this week, we surmise that we could have several more E-learning days. As we think about the educational value of these days, and since we are still new at this, we believe that two E-Learning days in a row should be max for us. Therefore, if we would need to close school for a third consecutive day, that day would be made up on the first available planned make up day in our school calendar, which in this case, would be Friday, Feb. 15.

Please remember that students have five school days to complete their E-Learning assignments.

We will try to make all weather-related decisions this week in as prudent and timely manner as possible. Thank you all, and stay warm and safe out there!

For Jan. 28, 2019 after school activities cancellations

Due to worsening road conditions all Elementary and GMS after schools activities are cancelled.

GHS Activities:
The 9th grade boys basketball game at John Glenn is postponed for tonight. The Freshman team will practice in Whiteman Gym after school until 5:30.

Varsity boys basketball and varsity girls basketball are still practicing.

Boys swim practice is still on after school at GHS. The Culver’s Give Back Night has been postponed until 2/5.

Nelson’s chicken tickets and money for all boys and girls track members will be due tomorrow. Please turn them in to Coach Willis and Coach DuBois.

Musical practice is still on until 5:15 p.m.

All out of season athletic activities are canceled – including the weight room.

GHS Modified Testing Day Schedule ( Disponible en español)

ATTENTION: IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL PARENTS/GUARDIANS OF GHS STUDENTS

On April 23rd, 24th, 25th, and 26th some students at Goshen High School will be taking required state ISTEP, ECA, and ILEARN tests.  Because only selected students must take the exam, the rest of the students will participate in online learning partial days. This means that all students who are testing should arrive at their normal time. All other students do not have to arrive at GHS until 10:45 a.m. However, all students not testing will have assignments that need to be completed on their computer. These late start online learning days only apply to students who are not testing. If you are not certain if your child needs to participate in either test, please have them check with their SRT teacher, Guidance or the main office. 

If your child rides a bus, the busses will run at the normal times. Students who are not testing will be allowed to work on the online assignment or other homework in the cafeteria. There will be no delayed buses those mornings. Again, if students choose not to arrive until 10:45 a.m., they will be responsible for their own transportation.

These alternate schedules are put in place to help provide an excellent testing environment.  Please feel free to contact the principal or any of the assistant principals if you have questions. GHS Student GMAIL passwords updated

All GHS student GMAIL passwords have been updated prior to the beginning of the school year and laptop distribution this week.  Students need to login to SKYWARD using their current password to get their new GMAIL password before Wednesday, August 1. All laptop/Skyward passwords will be reset prior to laptop distribution Wednesday.

GHS “Back-to-School” packets available online

We are happy to announce a more convenient way of completing the annual summer mailing forms, through Skyward Family Access. In Skyward Family Access, you can complete on-line forms for your student as well as access grades, attendance, discipline, and much more.  For instructions, go to skyward.goshenschools.org and click on “Skyward Family Access Help.” Online forms are saved with your student’s record and immediately available to school staff.  This is a “test” year for the online option, if you have students in other schools besides West Goshen and GHS you will need to complete the paper version for them.

Downloadable forms are located here. Look under “GHS Packets” should you prefer printing then filling out the paper version. You may pick up a packet at the GHS Main Office from 7:30a-4:00p M-TH starting July 16th. Paper versions of packets can be returned at laptop distribution in August

Live feed of GHS Calf now available

This week, the Engineering Technology classes at GHS began working with a sweet little soon-to-be-named Hereford calf who was born on Friday, April 13th. The calf is a Dwarf, bred purposely to be miniature. But she was also born with birth defects, namely, she only has one digit per foot, and her back legs are different lengths and deformed. Her front legs are strong, but due to her back leg deformities, she is unable to walk on her own.  Her owners, Don and Nancy Shaum did not want to put her down, so they enlisted the help of Jen Yoder, and her Tech. Ed. classes at Goshen High School.

Mrs. Yoder has been bottle feeding the young calf and taking her back and forth to school with her each day, while her students work to plan and develop a prosthetic or trainer device to help the calf stand and walk.  They are also currently working on a sling solution to assist with feeding.

There will be several opportunities for collaborative work with the calf, including: Working with GHS science teacher Cathy DeMeyer’s classes to study the calf with regard to its biology and genetics; and Mrs. Yoder has also invited Fairfield High School’s Vet. Tech. class to be involved in studying the calf and offering input for her care.

As you can imagine, GHS students and staff are very excited about this project! If you would like to follow along with the students as they work to make this calf’s life a little easier, you may follow @GHSEngineerTech on Twitter. If you are interested, you may also check in on the calf while she is at GHS. There will be a webcam on her from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. during the school day.

GHS is thankful to Don and Nancy Shaum for the opportunity for our students to work on this unique, real-world problem; especially when the subject is just so adorable! When the solution has been found for the calf’s mobility issues and she is able to stand and walk with the new device(s), she will return to the Shaum family where she will remain in their care as a beloved family pet

March 14 Student Led Walk Out Information

Dear Parents and Guardians of GHS Students,
As a response to the school shooting in Florida on February 14th, a group of GHS students would like to do something to recognize the lives lost. The students would like to stage a walk out on March 14th that would last for 17 minutes-one minute for every death. Our students simply want to honor the victims and have no desire to see this become a political rally. That would be my desire as well.

It is my belief that students should have the opportunity to gather in support of the victims. Therefore, GHS staff will work with the student body to assure a safe and orderly walk out. The walk out is purely voluntary and we will continue with class as much as possible. GHS administrators and other staff will oversee the walk out and the Goshen Police Department will be on campus to provide additional oversight due to students being outside. Students will be supervised and will be given specific instructions about how to exit GHS and where to gather for the moments of remembrance.

Students can learn a great deal from organizing and participating in civic engagement. This is an
opportunity for that to happen.

All other activities have been cancelled.
