The Goshen RedHawks varsity softball team watched the game slip away early and couldn’t recover in a 6-0 loss to the Elkhart Lions on Friday. The RedHawks struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Elkhart. Tyra Marcum took the loss in the pitching circle for Goshen. Emma Detwiler lead the offense with 2 hits for the night. The RedHawks are now 5-2 overall.
The Goshen RedHawks varsity softball team lost the lead late in the game for a 8-6 defeat to Fairfield on Saturday. Olivia Koshmider, Liz Ramirez and Tyra Marcum each had 2 hits while Olivia & Liz also added a double. Goshen will begin Northern Lakes Conference play on Monday at Northridge for a 5:30 start.
The Goshen JV & C teams competed in a double-header vs. LaPorte at Goshen Little League on Saturday. Game 1 was a JV game that was competitive until 2 outs in the top of the second inning when eight runs scored after a fielding communication error by the RedHawks. The Slicers of LaPorte would add four more runs later in the game behind a no-hit shutout by their pitcher. Goshen had only two baserunners in Game 1 and struck out 10 times. Caelan Miller pitched four innings, striking out three. Fernando Figueroa pitched an inning in relief.
Game 2 was played by the Goshen C team. LaPorte beat Goshen 14-2 in the second game and outhit the RedHawks 7-2. Brady Boocher had both Goshen hits with a double and a single. Drew Elliott drove in a run for the RedHawks as well. Isaac Rodriguez started on the mound and pitching two innings. Gage Worthman and Myles McLaughlin pitched in relief.
The RedHawks begin conference play on Monday, 4/19 with the JV slated to play at 5pm vs. Northridge at Goshen Little League.
Results from the annual Goshen Varsity Invitational on Saturday April 17 at Black Squirrel GC
Northridge wins the Invitational in a playoff over the NorthWood Panthers
Northridge 338
NorthWood 338
Goshen 339
Goshen’s Chase Meyer was the Invitational low medalist as he fired an even par 72 over the course at Black Squirrel.
The Goshen RedHawks dropped both games of Saturday’s double header to LaPorte High School by the scores of 14-0 and 15-3. 1 bad inning in each game was the detriment of the RedHawks during those games. The Slicers were able to have a 10 run 5th inning in the first game and a 14 run 2nd inning during the second game, creating two very lopsided games.
In game 1, Noah Meikle pitched for the RedHawks. He pitched 4.1 innings, giving up 5 earned runs on 5 hits. He struck out 1 batter and walked 5. Offensively, there wasn’t much to highlight. The RedHawks were held to 2 hits, one from Reece Fisher and one from Thomas Castillo. Castillo was able to steal 2 bases during the contest.
In game 2, the RedHawks had bright spots on the mound from Ezequiel Moreno who pitched 4 relief innings and only surrendered 1 earned run. On offense, the RedHawks were led by Reece Fisher again who had 2 doubles and 2 runs batted in. Isaiah Park also drew a walk that scored Mitch Daniels for the 3rd RedHawk run.
The RedHawks look to turn things around when they open up conference play on Monday April 19. That game is a home game and set to start at 5pm at Phend Field.
The RedHawks finished 2nd in the Goshen Round Robin going 2-1 in the tournament. Seniors Lucy Kramer, Joya Drenth, and Kathryn Detweiler were all undefeated to each improve to 5-0 this season. The girls are back in action Monday at Northridge.
