GHS Student Selected for Youth Brass Band

This summer the Brass Band of Battle Creek (BBBC) is continuing one of its most dynamic educational programs, the Youth Brass Band! The youth ensemble is comprised of high school students from Michigan and Indiana who auditioned during the 4th annual BBBC Youth Brass Band Day. During the 2017 auditions, GHS senior Josie Strader was selected for the ensemble!

The Youth Brass Band is under the direction of Michael J. Garasi, resident conductor of the BBBC, and Ed Zentera, BBBC member. The ensemble meets June through December and will present two concerts for the public, and perform with the BBBC at its holiday concert on Saturday, December 2, 2017.

This summer the students have taken part in master classes and group rehearsals with members of the BBBC, including a weekend retreat at Sherman Lake  YMCA Camp. This program is made possible in part by generous funding from the Binda Foundation, Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, and the Battle Creek Community Foundation.

The Youth Brass Band will hold its debut performance on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at the Sherman Lake YMCA Performance Shell starting at 8:00 p.m. There will also be some special guests from the BBBC in attendance. Former Football Practice Field-New Bus Lot

Construction crews are putting the finishing touches on the new GCS bus parking lot this week, in preparation for the start of school next week. Bus parking will now be located in the area of the former football practice field, an area which was lost to the state due to the rerouting of U.S. 33.

Some of the buses will be parked right next to the GHS baseball field.

Electrical has been installed so that the buses can be plugged in/kept warm during the cold winter months.

The U.S. 33 project started the process that led to the new field turf that was installed on Foreman Field last summer. The turf surface allows for practices to be held on the game field, without the usual wear and tear that can occur on a natural surface. Additionally, the new turf allows for the coaches and players to practice without having to cross U.S. 33!

Due to the work on the new parking lot, the buses were moved around over the summer, as maintenance staff completed usual service and inspections normally scheduled for the summer months. At times, buses were kept in the GHS parking lot, on the band practice field, by the administration center, and by the GCS warehouse.

It has been a busy summer, with many projects and facility updates. But, the bus lot will be ready, and the GCS buses will roll out of the new compound on August 4th ready to start a new school year!

Boys and Girls Club Information

The Goshen Boys and Girls Club is a wonderful partner to Goshen Community Schools and an excellent resource for our students. The Boys and Girls Club is currently closed to get ready for the school year, but they will reopen to all club members on the first day of classes for Goshen schools, Friday, August 4th.

As you’re getting your child ready for the new school year, don’t forget the many opportunities available to children at the Boys & Girls Club of Goshen! Parents may download and read the Parent Handbook early if they choose, as there are some changes this year that parents will need to be aware of before children can attend the Club. Club Information

During the school year, the Boys & Girls Club of Goshen is open Monday-Friday beginning at the end of the school day. The Club is available to kids from age 6 through 18 (1st Grade through Senior in high school). The age requirements vary from Club to Club so check if your children will be attending a different Club.

During the School Year

The Club facilities close at 8:00 pm each day. However, various age-specific programs and Club areas close earlier than 8:00 pm depending on the ages of Club members. For more information on hours of operation, please call the Club at (574) 533-4793.

Every member of the Goshen Club is able to enjoy a nutritious snack and hot supper every day, Monday through Friday. Special thanks to the Indiana Department of Education’s Child and Adult Care Food Program for providing funding for this effort.*

Early Bird Program

Members of the Club’s Early Bird Program (even during the summer) may arrive at the Club beginning at 6:30 am. There is a small fee for Early Bird Participation.

New staff appointment:

Mrs. Dolores Pfenning was approved as the new EL Director for the school district. Mrs. Pfenning has been employed at Goshen Community Schools since 2005, working as an EL instructor, career teacher, mentor teacher, and program director. Dr. Woodworth noted that Mrs. Pfenning’s personal experiences as an EL learner, her teaching experiences across multiple grade/school levels, and her credentials provide a solid background for her in this new role.

School Board Meeting Information

GCS is using new software for the electronic school board agenda, called BoardDocs. The school board meeting information, upcoming agendas, and minutes are still in the same location on the GCS website (www.goshenschools.org) under the About GCS tab, and then under GCS School Board Meetings, Agendas, and Minutes. However, there is now a drop down menu with two choices: 2017-18 Meetings and Archived Meetings.

All board meeting minutes from July 10, 2017 forward will be displayed in the BoardDocs software, under the 2017-18 Meetings tab.

The GCS school board meets in the Administration Center board room on Monday nights (typically the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month) at 6:00 p.m., unless otherwise noted on the board agenda. Parents, students, families, and community members are welcome to attend school board meetings to learn more about Goshen schools.

17-18 GHS Athletic Ticket Information

Returning all-sport Ticket holders are reminded to return your order forms to the GHS athletic department.  Please email Janet Johns at jjohns@goshenschools.org if you intend to purchase but have not yet returned your application.  Returning all sport and/or season ticket holders who have not mailed back their ticket order and included a self-addressed stamped envelope can pick up their tickets on Tuesday, August 1st from 4 –  7 PM at the GHS athletic office.  This is also the time and date for those ticket holders to change seats it they want.  Starting Aug. 2nd, season and all-sport tickets can be purchased during regular office hours, 7:30 AM – 4 PM.

We will also distribute and sell all sport or football season tickets at the first home contests for any sports at which there is an admission charge.  You may also complete a ticket application and drop it off at the GHS athletic office anytime.  The application can be found at:  http://athletics.goshenschools.org/ticket-info/

Drive 4 UR School Fundraiser

DRIVE 4 UR SCHOOL

WHEN: Saturday, August 5th

TIME: 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM

REQUIREMENTS: Must be at least 18 years of age with a valid driver’s license. Only 1 person per household (address).

WHAT: Eby Ford Lincoln will partner with Goshen High School to conduct a test-drive fundraising event called “Drive 4 UR School”. The Drive 4 UR School program is a fun, engaging way to help Goshen High School raise money to support extracurricular activities in the community. For every valid test-drive completed, Eby Ford Lincoln will donate $20 to Goshen High School, up to $6,000! The test-drive takes less than 5 minutes to complete.

Walk up drivers are welcome at any time!

                   

Education Day at the Fair

The Elkhart County 4-H Fair will host Education Day on Friday, July 21st.

On Education Day, all students can get into the 4-H fair at no cost them, just by showing their 2016-17 school ID! College students are also included in the promotion. Students can get into the fair free until 3:00 p.m., after that time students will be charged for admission. Students must enter at the Main gate. There will be displays from local colleges, educational things for them to do (including drones that they can fly!), and local high school groups (including some from GHS) will also perform throughout the day.

Substitute Teachers Needed

Goshen Community Schools is looking for substitute teachers for the upcoming school year. If you are interested in subbing, we invite you to review the following procedural information.

Goshen Community Schools uses WillSub PCMI Staffing Services to arrange for substitute teachers. WillSub will hold a meeting to sign up for subbing in the Goshen schools at the GCS Administration Center, located at 613 E. Purl St. Goshen, on Tuesday, July 18, 2017. This meeting, which will include orientation, training, and signing up to sub, will last from 10:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. To register for the meeting, please visit www.pcmiservices.com and click on the registration link under Upcoming Sub Orientations.

Below is a list of items you will need to bring to the meeting:

  • Your personal email address and password
  • 3 reference names with valid emails
  • Banking information for direct deposit
  • Copy of “official” college transcripts or teaching license, if applicable

  • Copy of your valid IDs for employment verification (I-9 form). These can include: Passport OR drivers license and social security card OR drivers license and birth certificate.

The daily rate of pay is dependent upon a person’s level of education, and all subs must have a minimum of a high school diploma.

7-10-17 Board Recognition

New school board member, José Elizalde was sworn in by the board president, Felipe Merino. Mr. Elizalde replaces José Ortiz, who resigned in June, in the District 1 seat. Mr. Elizalde’s term will run through the end of 2018.

GHS incoming senior Elkah DeVoe was honored as a Gold Medalist in the 2017 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

Ariana Perez Diener was honored for being named Academic All-State for Girls Track and Field.

Other GHS spring athletes were also awarded Academic All-State, but were unable to attend this board meeting. They will be recognized at a later date.
