GHS ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2019

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is available for filing from now until April 15, 2020.  To give yourself the best chance to secure financial assistance complete the FAFSA as soon as possible.  If you’ve started the application but are stuck, if you have specific questions about it, or if you’re just unsure about completing it on your own –  you’re in luck!  GHS is hosting a FAFSA Completion Night on Monday, October 28th in the cafeteria.  A financial expert from InvestEd as well as the GHS School Counselors will be on hand to provide assistance to students and families.  If you’re interested in attending stop in the School Counseling Office to pick up a handout of what you need to being with you on the 28th.

Boys and girls swim team members: We have concessions on October 19th. Please see ChaLi’ Kuiper in the main office BY FRIDAY to sign up!

E-Sports Club will be starting on Monday October 21st in room 1070 and on Tuesday and Wednesday in Room 2040. We will be opening up to games other than League of Legends this year.  Please bring your school laptop for game installing. Hope to see you there!

If you purchased tamales from the German Club/NHS fundraiser, the pick-up will be TODAY from 4:00-6:00 on the end of the GHS parking lot near Purl Street. Look for the Universal Tamal truck!

IUSB will be here for on-site admissions on TODAY from 9:00 a.m. through 1:30 p.m.  Please sign up in the guidance office for a time slot.  They will be giving away some $500 scholarships!

Since the school pictures just arrived, we are having an additional retake day next Friday, October 11th!  Students will be called down by grade that morning.  If you would like to do retakes next week, and do not plan on ordering online, please pick up a form from the Main Office.  You must bring back your original photo packet if you plan to retake your picture!

On-site admissions from Purdue Fort Wayne will be in the Guidance Office on Friday, October 11th from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Please stop by Guidance and sign up for a time slot to meet with the admissions counselor.  Please fill out the online application during College Go Week (September 23-29) and this will be FREE!  The application needs to be filled out BEFORE you come for your meeting.  If you have any questions, please stop in guidance and ask.

Any student interested in wrestling please remember to sign up in the main office THIS week and pick up an information sheet.  If you have already signed up, please stop by and pick up the correct information paper.

If you are planning on taking Internship next semester, you must turn in an application BEFORE Fall Break.  Please turn them in with your printed transcript to Mrs. Schmucker in 1010 or Mr. Cross in 1060.  You can pick up an application in Guidance if you need one.

Do you have a book to read over fall break?  Stop in the learning commons to check one out this week, or you can also check out an eBook from your laptop.  Or would you like an eCard to use over fall break?  Stop by to pick one up!

Goshen hosts the IHSAA Volleyball Sectional on October 15th, 17th, and 19th over fall break and the RedHawks play on the 15th at 6:00 p.m.  While we cannot give GHS students a break on the price of admission due to IHSAA rules, we are offering all GHS students with their ID a $2 coupon to the concession stand in sessions in which the RedHawks play.  Come and support the RedHawks volleyball team as they go for a sectional championship at home!

Senior Night for the RedHawks football team is on Friday, October 18th, over fall break.  All GHS students who attend the game and bring another GHS student will get one FREE admission for one paid entry.  THIS IS NOT HALF PRICE NIGHT!  We want you to bring a GHS friend!  Come and show your school spirit over fall break as we play Wawasee and win back the WarHawk trophy.

Junior students, it is never too early to think about possibly pursuing a career in science. If you are interested in the sciences and are thinking about going to college then please sign-up now in the guidance office for the Valparaiso University College Visit on Thursday, October 24th from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  Only 28 slots are available so it is first come, first serve!

Attention Students:  Jostens will be here Tuesday, November 12th during SRT for Senior Order Day.  This is the LAST time you will be able to order graduation materials without paying a late fee.  Everyone planning to graduate should have at least a cap, gown, and tassel.  Information on how to order will be sent to your SRT teacher and posted in your SRT room.  Your SRT will be assigned a time to go to the commons and place your orders.  Extra packets are available in the main office.

The Ceres Solutions Scholarship is available.  You can apply at www.ceres.coop or pick up a paper copy in the School Counseling office.  You must be a four year 4-H member or have two years in your local FFA program.  The deadline is March 1st, 2020

The RedHawks Ambassadors program is looking for bilingual students willing to help out in the resource rooms during SRT.  The RedHawks Ambassadors will be assigned to resource rooms to help resource teachers and EL collaborators working with EL students.  If you are interested please contact Mr. Porter at wporter@goshenschools.org for more information.

The 2018-2019 yearbooks have arrived and are being delivered to SRT classes!  If you didn’t order a yearbook but would like one, you can email Ms. Pobocik at ppobocik@staff.goshenschools.org.  We have a very limited number of yearbooks available for purchase which will go on a first come, first serve basis.  If you know a 2019 graduate who ordered a yearbook, please have them email Ms. Pobocik to set up a time to pick it up.

It’s time to register for your IB exams!  Please turn in your completed form to Mrs. Haney in the main office.  Also, you don’t need to pay in full when you turn in the form.  Please take care of this as soon as possible!

Key Club and Environmental Club are collecting caps for benches.  We are trying to get enough for two benches.  Please deliver CLEAN #2, 4 or 5 caps or lids to your SRT before October 31st.  The SRT with the most caps/lids collected will receive pizza.  The SRT that comes in 2nd will receive cookies.  Please help our school have comfortable places to sit.

Homework help is available every Tuesday and Thursday in room 1190 from 3:45-4:50 p.m.  You must be in room 1190 by 3:50 p.m. in order to stay for this.  You are expected to exit the building through door M where a bus will be available at 5:00 p.m. if you need a ride home.  This bus is for students who stay for after-hours help ONLY.  This is a great opportunity if you just need a little extra time or even just a quiet place to do your homework at the end of the day.

YOU MUST BE STAYING AFTER SCHOOL FOR SOMETHING TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS – The GHS cafeteria is offering free after school snacks every day after school.  This program is for any student who is staying after school.  All student-athletes, club members, music participants, drama participants, after school homework help kids, etc. are strongly encouraged to stop by the cafeteria after school and take advantage of this generous opportunity.  Students just need to show their ID and they can grab a healthy snack to go that will hold them over during their after school activities until dinner.  The cafeteria will stay open until 3:50 p.m. to hand out the snacks.  All students picking up the healthy snack after school will need to eat their snack in the cafeteria.  We appreciate your cooperation with this adjustment that is mandated by the state of Indiana in order to continue this program.  Student athletes are expected to get their snack immediately after school.  They should change clothes for practice AFTER they get their snack.

REMINDER:  Any student driving needs to have a parking tag.  You can get this through Mrs. Haney in the Bookkeeper’s office.  You need to have a valid license, valid registration, valid proof of insurance (this means that none of these can be expired), and $5.  You don’t want to be the proud new owner of a big orange sticker.

You are under no circumstances allowed to lock your bike up to any fence or gate on school property.  There has been a problem with students specifically doing this along the fence/gate to the soccer fields.  If you continue to do this, your lock will be cut, and your bike will be removed.  There are bike racks available, and they should be used.  Thank you for your cooperation with this!

After school, it is expected that all students exit the building by 3:50 p.m.  If you have an after school activity, you should report to the sponsor’s room responsible for that activity by 3:50 p.m.  You are not to remain in the hallways or commons after 3:50 p.m.  Thank you for your cooperation with this request.

Free/reduced lunch forms are available in the bookkeeper’s office, in the cafeteria and in guidance.  Please pick one up if you need it!

WORK PERMITS:  When you get a work permit EVERY box needs to be filled out on the Intent to Employ form before we will issue you the work permit.  Please bring completed forms to the main office in the morning and they will be completed by the end of the school day.

If you are a student that leaves the building at any time during normal school hours then you must have a sticker on your ID if it’s for a class (PACT, Building Trades, EACC, Merit, shortened schedules, Red Zone, internship, yearbook, etc.) that indicates that or a blue pass from the office indicating that you have permission to leave.  GTV and Red Zone students are also required to sign out at the Welcome Center before leaving.  You can get this sticker in the main office from Mrs. Wolfe or Mrs. Kuiper.

Just a reminder that if you are coming to see Ms. Tovar you need to check in with the staff in the main office and fill out a request to see her.  She will send a white pass for you as she has time.  Please do not cut through the nurse’s office to get to her.  You need to enter through the main office.

MEETINGS DURING SRT:

The GHS Book Club will be reading Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card for their meeting TODAY.  Students and staff will meet during the 2nd session of SRT to discuss the book with yummy snacks!  Get your own copy of the book or come to room 3180 to check one out from GHS.  Contact Mr. De Kleine, Emily Brugh, or Noemi Vela with further questions or to be included on the e-mail list.

SPORTS SCORES:

The GHS RedHawks boys Varsity soccer team played a tough Elkhart Central Blue Blazer team on Wednesday evening, but fell just short, in Penalty Kicks, by a score of 4-3. The RedHawks and Blue Blazers were tied 1-1, at the end of regulation, and overtime, before Penalty Kicks decided the final outcome. Chris Lozano scored the goal for the RedHawks, during regulation. The loss brings the season record to 10-7-1 overall, and 4-3 in the NLC.

IN SPORTS ACTION TODAY:

Boys freshmen football will play at Northridge at 6:00 p.m.
