GHS ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR FRIDAY, MAY 13, 2016

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Graduation tickets can be picked up in the main office starting TODAY. If you have graduation tickets that you will not be using please turn those in to the main office as soon as possible.  

Great News!  If you are registered for summer school at GHS and you need transportation it will be available.  Please make sure to see Mrs. Haney in the bookkeeper’s office to let her know if you need a bus to pick you up/take you home.

Extra Graduation Tickets:  We are running very low on extra tickets this year, so please check with friends first to see if maybe they have extra tickets that they will not use.  If you cannot find any from friends, e-mail Mrs. Stealy at fstealy@goshenschools.org and you will be put on a waiting list.

AJP Brunk Corp. has summer jobs on all three shifts.  They are looking for people to do general factory labor, including driving a forklift and you must be able to lift 50 lbs.  They will train you to drive a forklift if you don’t have experience.  Pay is $12/hour and you will work 40 hours per week.  Contact Joe McPhilamy at 533-1109 ext. 35 if interested.

Seniors: The guidance office has received a $1,000 Student Assistance Award—Essay Contest.  Stop in to pick up eligibility requirements.

All are invited to attend the Centennial Orchestra concert on Sunday, May 22^nd at 3:00 p.m. in the GHS main gym.  This free concert will feature all orchestra students and be a celebration of the 100 years of our orchestra program.

Attention football players:  Your permission slips for the weightlifting competition at Wawasee are due this week to Coach Park.  Please drop those off to him in room 1160.

Any student planning to participate in graduation must attend graduation marching practicing on the last day of school on Friday, May 27^th from 2:15-3:35 p.m. in the main gym.  This is a mandatory rehearsal for all students participating in graduation.

Crimsonaire auditions will be next week on Wednesday, May 18^th and Friday, May 20^th after school.  This is a show choir group that has a great time performing throughout the community and beyond.  You do not need to currently be in a choir to audition.  Auditions are open to all! There is also a need for instrumentalists in our back up band.  If you are interested in playing in the back-up band talk to Ms. Yost in the choir office.  Sign up for an audition time in the choir room.  To audition, bring a solo to sing – we will have a piano accompanist available or you can sing with a track.  Plan now to audition for this fun opportunity to become a Crimsonaire!

IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week:  Last week was the NFL draft.  As always, there were some surprises as to where the college stars landed and which teams would select them.  But regardless, there is always competition.  The draft assures nothing.  New Denver Broncos quarterback Mark Sanchez said it best.  “If you are confident in your ability, you have no problem helping a guy.”  If you are an upperclassmen, take this suggestion to heart.  Always be of help to the young players on your team and encourage them constantly.  Your leadership and attitude will truly affect their growth as a player and student-athlete!

Football open gyms will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:15-8:00 a.m. in Whiteman gym for the next two weeks.  See Coach Park for more details.

The Drama Club will take their annual one day trip to Chicago on May 29^th.  We will see the play, One Man, Two Guvnors at the Court Theatre.  We will also go to the Chicago Art Museum, dine on the Hyde Park Square and ride in a Cardinal Coach.  Anyone interested can purchase a ticket for $65.00.  Drama Club participants can get a $15.00 discount if they purchase their ticket this week.  See Mrs. Long in room 1400 to purchase tickets, or if you have further questions.

All senior student-athletes who participated in a spring sport can stop by the commons area and see Mr. Kissinger during lunch on Thursday, May 26^th for some ice cream and to write thank you notes.  Thank you for your hard work this season!

The guidance office has just received the Indiana Latino Institute Scholarship.  Stop in to pick up an application.

Seniors: If you need your final transcript sent to the college you are attending in the fall or have received any scholarships, please let Ms. Hollinger know in the guidance office.

Students who plan on attending Merit summer school:  Enrollment started this week and will continue until spots are filled.  Sessions will run Monday, June 6^th thru Thursday, June 30^th.  You must attend ALL sessions until your class is complete.  Morning or afternoon sessions are available.  The cost is $50, and you will only be able to complete one class.  You must meet with your Guidance counselor to do the on-line enrollment.  A bill for payment will be emailed to you.  Information forms are now available in the Guidance office, so don’t delay!

Attention Juniors and Seniors:  Prom tickets are on sale during lunches Tuesday-Friday through May 13^th for $35 each, payable by cash or check.

The guidance office has just received the Elkhart County Farm Bureau Scholarship.  Stop in for an application.

After hours homework help for any class is now available!  On Mondays and Wednesdays you can meet in the media center after school until 5:00 p.m.

The Ultimate Frisbee Club meets after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45-5:00 p.m. on the administration field.  If you’re interested in learning how to play the sport of Ultimate Frisbee, you can pick up your required paperwork from Lucas Kauffman, Mr. Brubaker, Mr. Snyder in the choir office or from Mrs. Stealy in the main office. The paperwork should be turned in the first time you attend.

The girls tennis team finished 7^th in the NLC tournament this week.  In the final round, Cheyenne Kalb toughed out a shoulder injury by serving underhand to complete her match.  Kayleigh Crowder overcame a slow start to win her final match 8-3, and Gaby Ferra overcame a 2-5 deficit to win 9-7.

The boys JV golf team lost to Plymouth.  The team was led by freshman Gabe Yoder with a 57. Freshman Allan Garratt added a 58 while senior Luke Rush and junior Will Gaby added 59. Junior Ian Shreiner Barger shot 64.

The boys varsity golf team lost to Plymouth.  The team was led by senior Matt Truex and sophomore Peyton Cripe with 45s.  Taylor Cordell added a 51, William Troyer a 57 and Evan Beck shot 56.

The girls track team placed 5^th at the NLC Conference Championship in route to finishing 4^th overall in the conference for the season. The girls had many personal-best performances and good overall efforts, including: the 4×800 relay’s 2^nd place finish (Jill Kissinger, Maggie Gallagher, Hannah Kurtz, Nora Rangel), Jill Kissinger’s 2^nd place finish in the 300 Hurdles, Kim Grounds’ 3^rd place finish in pole vault, Kassandra Rodriguez’s 3^rd place finish in shot put, the 4×400 relay’s 4^th place finish (Jill Kissinger, Maggie Gallagher, Hannah Kurtz, Nora Rangel), Nora Rangel’s 5^th place finish in the 800, Hannah Kurtz’s 5^th place finish in the 400, Jill Kissinger’s 5^th place finish in the 100m Hurdles, Kyrie Potter and Monse Rodriguez’s 6^th and 7^th place finishes in high jump, and Suzette Rodriguez’s 6^th place finish in shot put. Jill Kissinger was named All Conference and Nora Rangel was named All Conference Honorable Mention for their outstanding performances.

The girls varsity softball team came up short losing to Northridge by a score of 6-0.

 

IN SPORTS ACTION TODAY:

The girls varsity tennis team will compete in NLC finals at 4:30 p.m.

The girls JV and varsity softball teams will host Concord at 5:00 p.m.

The boys JV and varsity baseball teams will play at Concord at 5:00 p.m.

On Saturday:

The boys varsity golf team will play in the Culver Academies Invite at 9:00 a.m.

The boys JV baseball team will host Angola in a DH starting at 9:00 a.m.

The girls JV softball team will play in the Tiger Tourney at 9:00 a.m.

The boys/girls JV track and field teams are competing in the Charger Invitational at 10:00 a.m.
