GHS ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 2015

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

STUDENTS:  You are not allowed to have lunch or drinks delivered to you without the prior approval of an administrator.  You either need to bring your lunch or eat in the cafeteria.  Thank you!

In order to get a work permit, you need a completed Intent to Employ form filled out by your employer and a parent/guardian.  This form can be obtained from Mrs. Stealy in the Main Office or from your employer.  Once the completed form is turned back in to Mrs. Stealy, it can take up to 24 hours to issue your actual work permit.  This time allows us to check your grades and attendance.  If you are failing classes or not coming to school, you could be denied a work permit or a work permit that was previously issued could be revoked.  Please note that this is a change from how we have previously done them in the past, so don’t wait until the last minute to turn it in and expect that you will get it back the same day.

The Ultimate Frisbee Club meets after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45-5:00 p.m. on the administration field. If you’re interested in learning how to play the sport of Ultimate Frisbee, you can pick up your required paperwork from Mr. Snyder in the choir office, Lucas Kauffman, or in the main office. The paperwork should be turned in the first time you attend.

Rule the Road  This is a free teen driving event complete with a road course with instructors and a pizza lunch on October 10^th (note the date change) from 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. at the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Dept.  This is open to students with a learner’s permit, or in their first year of having their license.  You can pick up a form packet in the main office which must be turned in to Mrs. Stealy with a copy of your learner’s permit or driver’s license by Monday.

Jostens representatives will be here again during the 1^st session of SRT on October 1^st to take senior orders for cap/gown/tassel units and graduation products in the commons.  If your total is under $75, you need to pay in full. If it’s over $75, a $75 deposit is required. You can check out all Jostens products at jostens.com.

Tomorrow, Student Council will host a glowcoming dance from 8:00-11:00 p.m. in Whiteman gym. There will be lots of music, strobe lights, glow sticks, black lights and neon colors.  The cost is $5 at the door or $4 during lunch. Students with activity stickers will pay $3.  We will also be selling glow sticks for you to use at the dance. Feel free to wear white or neon colors to the dance – it’ll look great!

GHS will be hosting a college fair on Tuesday from 6:30-8:00 p.m. in the commons and cafeteria.  Over 70 colleges and members of the Armed Forces will be represented.  There will also be a presentation for students and parents at 7:00 p.m. to explain the college financial aid process. This event is a great way to talk with college representatives and hear what different colleges have to offer.

Jim Whittaker from Goshen College is running sports performance every Monday and Wednesday after school from 4:00-5:00 p.m. at the GHS track for all GHS student athletes not currently in a fall sport.  This is a great way to improve your athleticism!  You need a current physical exam and concussion paperwork on file in the athletic office to join.  See you at the track!

It’s time to order your 2015-2016 school yearbook. The cost of the book is $45 until December, meaning the best time to buy is now! You can find order forms at the RedZone, in the main office, library and the guidance office. Order before October 30^th and you can be entered in a drawing to win a free yearbook. 2^nd place will receive $5 in RedZone bucks. We will announce the winners on Friday, October 30^th.

IHSAA Student-Athlete Tip of the Week: One of the many challenges facing the high school athlete is how to respond to the media (school newspaper, local paper, radio or television) after a hard earned victory or a tough defeat. Athletes are most vulnerable after a tough loss. Choose your words carefully and think about what you want to say before you say it. Don’t make excuses and give credit where credit is due. After a victory, it’s important to remain humble. There are usually multiple reasons your team wins, so give credit to all of those involved. Short answers are better than long ones. The more you have the experience of talking with the media, the more comfortable you will become. Win or lose, enjoy the opportunity of your interview. It becomes easier with time!

It’s homecoming week! Today is Redskin Day!

Effective Thursday, line 4 in the cafeteria will also be cashless.  The ONLY place you will be able to use cash will be the snack room. You can deposit money during breakfast in the cafeteria or anytime online at myschoolbucks.com.

All 2014-2015 lunch applications have expired.  If you have not filled out a new free/reduced lunch application, please do so ASAP with Mrs. Haney in the bookkeeper’s office.  Without assistance, breakfast is $1.10 and lunch is $2.05 per day.

Any student interested in joining Key Club should turn in a completed application and membership fee to Mrs. Haney in the Bookkeeper’s Office.  This applies to all NEW and RENEWING club members.  Email Mrs. Dillman if you have any questions.

The mascot steering committee is happy to announce the dates for which mascot and nickname submittals are open. Beginning TODAY through October 4^th, submittal forms will be available. Paper copies of the form will be available beginning TODAY through Friday, October 2^nd at either the GMS or GHS welcome center. Paper copies can be returned to the high school or middle school welcome centers. Online forms may be found at www.goshenschools.org and e-mailed to mascot@students.goshenschools.org. It’s important for all submitters to know the following: Submissions will only be considered if submitted by Goshen High School alumni living within the Goshen School boundaries and GHS/GMS students. Native American symbolism or language will not be considered. The school colors of red/white will be retained. The Redskin mascot will not be used after January 1 of 2016. JAG is sponsoring a trip to Ancilla College on October 15^th for juniors and seniors. Lunch and transportation will be provided. The permission slip can be picked up from Ms. Hollinger in Guidance and returned to her when it’s signed. It is first come first serve, and there are limited spots available, so don’t delay!

 

MEETINGS DURING SRT:

Calling all French students:  The first meeting for French Club is almost here!  We will meet Tuesday during the 2^nd session of SRT in room 2340.  We look forward to seeing you there!

All junior student-athletes are encouraged to take part in the Be the Best leadership program that will take place during 2^nd period and SRT in the auditorium on Tuesday.

The next Key Club meeting will be in the cafeteria during the 2^nd session of SRT on Thursday.  We will be voting for Class Representatives, so please plan to attend.

The call-out meeting for the GSA will be on Tuesday during the 2^nd session of SRT in room 2190. The goal of the GSA is to provide a safe environment for all LGBTQ+ students and LGBTQ+ supporting students. We hope to see you there!

 

SPORTS SCORES:

The girls varsity volleyball team defeated Concord 3-1.

The girls JV volleyball team lost to Concord 0-2.

The girls volleyball C team lost to New Prairie 0-2.

On senior night the girls soccer team defeated East Noble 7-0.  Aylissa Trosper had a hat trick to lead the Goshen offense.  Also scoring for Goshen were Kassandra Rodriguez, Ashton Ellis, Daphne May and Hannah Kurtz. Ashton Ellis, Pricila Flores and Xenia Isaula assisted on the goals. Goshen’s defense was dominate posting its 5^th shutout on the season.  The girls record now stands at 7-3-2. The girls JV soccer team defeated East Noble 6-0.  Sandra Mondragon and Karina Pimentel each scored two goals to lead the offense.  Hannah Rose and Lexi Flores also scored for Goshen.  The JV girls record now stands at 8-3-1. Goshen said goodbye to five seniors last night. Congratulations to Jelitza Palomino, Xenia Isaula, Alyssa Hershberger, Catherine Loera and Courtney Pollock. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported the girls this season!

The boys varsity soccer team defeated Warsaw to win the NLC. Goshen goal scorers were Juan Castaneda, Marcos Hernandez, Alexis Martinez, Lucas Bontreger, Sebastian Flores and Alejandro Rosales. Assists for Goshen were Lucas Bontreger, Marcos Hernandez and Eduardo Pizana. Mason Short had three saves for Goshen and Antonio Ledezma had two saves. Goshen led in shots on goal at 8 to 5.

The boys JV soccer team defeated Warsaw 5-0. Goal scorers for Goshen were Adolfo Villegas (2), Franco Hernandez, Ciro Agular and Bryan Olvera. Assists for Goshen were Ciro Agular, Ricardo Vargez and Bryan Olvera.

The boys varsity football team will host Warsaw at 7:00 p.m.

Saturday’s Events:

The boys varsity tennis team will compete in NLC finals at Northwood starting at 9:00 a.m.

The boys/girls JV and varsity cross country teams will compete in the New Haven Classic at 9:00 a.m.

The boys JV and varsity soccer teams will travel to face off against Ft. Wayne Carroll. The JV team plays at 10:00 a.m., followed by varsity at 11:45 a.m.

The boys JV football team will play at Warsaw at 10:00 a.m.

The girls JV and varsity soccer teams will compete at Ft. Wayne Carroll at 10:00 a.m.

The girls JV and varsity volleyball teams will play at Elkhart Christian Academy. JV plays at 10:00 a.m., followed by varsity at 11:30 a.m.

The girls JV and varsity soccer teams will compete at Homestead High School. JV plays at 2:00 p.m., followed by varsity at 3:45 p.m.

The boys JV and varsity soccer teams will host Homestead High School. JV plays at 3:00 p.m., followed by varsity at 4:45 p.m.
