GHS ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR MONDAY, MARCH 7, 2016                                

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

On Friday, both jazz bands competed in the ISSMA Jazz Contest earning straight gold ratings from all of the judges.  Goshen is the only school in the state of Indiana to send both bands group and earn straight Gold ratings.

On Saturday, the varsity winter guard advanced to state finals by placing 3rd in state prelims.  They will compete this Saturday at Center Grove High School.  Congratulations ladies!

On Saturday, the winter percussion placed both the concert world and marching world ensembles in to the WGI Indianapolis finals!  The concert world ensemble placed 1st overall and the marching ensemble placed 7th with groups coming all the way from Mississippi to compete.

Due to ISTEP testing, the Career Center field trip has been postponed until Thursday, March 24th. Those students with signed permission slips will still be allowed to attend. There are still eight seats available on the bus. If you did not get signed up and would like to see the Career Center you may still turn in a permission slip and attend but it will be limited to the first eight people to turn in a permission slip. See Ms. Hollinger in the guidance office to sign up.

Super Mileage Club will meet on the following dates: March 8th and 22nd. Times are 7-8:15 a.m. and/or 3:45-5:30 p.m.

Reminder: Merit on the Move runs from 3:45-5:45 p.m. every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon through May in the Apex Lab. If you signed up to take a class, but don’t show up, your spot may be given to another student. If you have any questions email Mr. Wolf.

Tickets for the spring musical “Mary Poppins” are now on sale in the choir office.  The tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students through high school age.  The seating is reserved so be sure to purchase your tickets with the people you plan to sit with at the show.  Show times are March 10th, 11th and 12th at 7:00 p.m. and matinees/afternoon shows on the 12th and 13th at 2:00 p.m.  Plan now to attend and watch this great show full of fun music!  You will also see some tremendous “flying” affects.  For further information contact the choir office.

If you are interested in trying out for the girls softball team TODAY you need to have all of your paperwork completed before trying out.  Tryouts will take place from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in the warehouse.  If you have any questions please contact Coach Kulp.

The Goshen Public Library doesn’t just lend books! We also offer FREE activities for young adults. Stop in on Thursdays after school from 4:00-6:00 p.m. to hang out, study, find an independent reading book, play a board game, color or just chillax at the teen café! We’ll also have hot chocolate and coffee. Our two NEW clubs are continuing in March! Weebz Anonymous, our manga club, meets first and third Wednesdays from 4:00-5:00 p.m. and Courageous Pages, our creative writing club, meets fourth Wednesdays from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in the teen area. Our regular monthly programming continues on Friday, March 11th with our Nerd’s Night Out: International Iron Chef from 6:00-8:00 p.m. with a taste-test game, menu creation contest and cooking contest with prizes! Pages & Popcorn Club happens Thursday, March 17th from 5:30-8:00 p.m. We’ll talk about the book Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials and watch the movie (rated PG-13).  Finally, our regular programming will conclude this month with the Crafty Bandits, which will meet up on Monday, March 28th from 4:30-6:30 p.m. to have snacks and learn how to play with electricity to “hack” art and book cover prints to decorate the teen area. The Unified Track & Field and the Student Athletic Council will be sponsoring a “Spread the Word to End the Word” day on Thursday.  Students and staff, we invite you to be a fan of respect and join us in an ongoing campaign to stop the use of the R-word and pledge #Respect for everyone.  Over 500,000 people have pledged their support online since the campaign launched in 2009 and we hope you can join us by making your pledge to end the use of the R-word.  Please come by the commons before school or during lunch hours on the Thursday to sign the banner to symbolize your promise to help end the “R” word!  Visit www.R-word.org for more information on this national program and to make your pledge online!

Marine biology students are reminded that the first seminar is Monday, March 14th from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in the media center. Your attendance is required at these seminars so please clear any conflicts that you might have. If you have questions see Mr. or Mrs. Weaver.

All fall and winter senior athletes please stop by and see Mr. Kissinger during lunch on Thursday near the weight room to sign a thank you note and receive free ice cream!

Physical Night will take place on Monday, April 18th at Goshen Orthopedics & Sports Medicine from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Physicals are available to current 6th graders through 11th graders for only $20 and are by appointment only. For an appointment, go to the GHS Athletic Office and sign up with Mrs. Schrock. You must have the completed/signed paperwork (which can be picked up from Mrs. Schrock) and the $20 to reserve your appointment. MEETINGS DURING SRT:

Attention all Mr. GHS participants: There has been a slight change in the meeting schedule. The planning committee will meet TOMORROW during the 1st session of SRT in Mrs. Newport’s room (3200). All Mr. GHS contestants and their escorts will then meet 2nd session in the main gym that same day.

There will be a volleyball call out meeting on March 22nd during the 2nd session of SRT in the main gym for ANYONE interested in playing volleyball next year. If you plan on playing next year, please attend this meeting. We will go over expectations and schedules for the spring and summer and the upcoming season. If you are unable to attend this meeting due to testing, please email Coach West at kwest@goshenschools.org.

 

SPORTS SCORES:

The varsity boys basketball team lost to Elkhart Central 68-40 on Friday night. The loss ends the season for the RedHawks. Cam Kline led Goshen with 20 points, and Colton Potter, CJ Detweiler and Eliot Nafziger each added five points apiece. Brady Bechtel had six assists. Goshen ends the season at 10-14 and 3-4 in the NLC.

The girls track & field team competed in their first indoor meet at IWU. Leading competitors for Goshen were: Kyrie Potter who placed 9th in in high jump, Kim Grounds who placed 5th in pole vault, Kassandra Rodrigues who placed 2nd in shot put, Jill Kissinger who placed 3rd in 60m hurdles, Karla Walton Hernandez who placed 4th in 60m hurdles, the 4×800 relay team of Jill Kissinger, Maggie Gallagher, Hannah Kurtz and Nora Rangel who placed 4th and the distance medley team of Hannah Kurtz, Maggie Gallagher, Kaleigh McKee and Jill Kissinger who placed 3rd.

The boys track team throwers competed in the Portage Region Rumble shot put competition on Friday night. Top Performances were: Jordan Holley (47’2″), Brock Tauteris (44’8″), Alec Lehr (42’11”), Thomas Heim (42’7″) and Jacob Gerber (40’8″).

The boys track & field team competed indoors Saturday at the Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcat Qualifier. Places were awarded, but no team score. Top Performers of the meet for Goshen were: Josuel Sanchez placed 2nd in 60m Hurdles, Brenn McKee placed 2nd in pole vault, Dave Marshall placed 3rd in high jump, Ronaldo Garcia placed 4th in long jump, Jordan Holley placed 4th in shot put, Brock Tauteris placed 5th in shot put, Thomas Heim placed 10th in shot put, Jeff Stoll placed 10th in long jump and the DMR relay team of Zach Oyer, Jacob Grewe, Jason Barahona and Juan Perez placed 4th.
