ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Picture retakes are on September 8th.

Congratulations to Mrs. Bruder’s 7th Period German 2 class on their 2nd win in a row for Spirit Fridays.  They challenge all 7th periods in the school to a spirit duel!  Do you have more spirit than they do?

Are you looking for a way to get involved?  Are you interested in local politics?  If so, be looking for a special announcement from Goshen mayor, Jeremy Stutsman, as he announces his plan for a city council youth advisor.  This will be a position elected by the students at Goshen High School.  More information is coming soon!

The Student Faculty Senate meets the first Thursday of each month in the media center.  All club sponsors are expected to attend.  All clubs are to have student representatives attend at least once/semester.  The first meeting of the year will be tomorrow from 7:45-8:15 a.m.  This group approves all fundraisers and new clubs/groups.  See Mr. Kissinger if you have any questions.

Are you a junior or senior who is overwhelmed by the college process or doesn’t have any plans after high school?  If you’ll be the first in your family to go to college, join Ms. Gomez (our new College Prep Coach) TODAY at 3:40 p.m. in the cafeteria for information on college readiness and preparation.  Ms. Gomez is prepared to help you apply for schools and scholarships, understand FAFSA and financial aid, find schools that have your major or career interest, and guide and support you along the way.

Students, if you are driving to school you must get a parking tag.  Officer Johnson has started checking vehicles in the parking lot.  Bring your license, current registration, current insurance and $5 to Mrs. Haney, the bookkeeper.

The Ultimate Frisbee Club meets after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45-5:00 p.m. on the administration field.  If you’re interested in learning how to play the sport of Ultimate Frisbee, you can pick up your required paperwork from Mr. Snyder in the choir office, Mr. Brubaker, Lucas Kauffman, or Mrs. Stealy in the main office.  The paperwork should be turned in to Lucas Kauffman the first time you attend.

The Student-Athletic Council meets the 1st Thursday of each month during the 2nd session of SRT in the main gym.  All junior and senior student athletes are encouraged to attend to take part in leadership activities facilitated by Mr. Krebs and Mr. Kissinger, to support the GHS Unified Track & Field team, and to make suggestions on improving the GHS athletic program.  Come down to the main gym TOMORROW to see what it’s all about.

Key Club will meet in the cafeteria TOMORROW during the 2nd session of SRT.  All new and current members should plan to attend.  Membership applications can be picked up in the Guidance Office, and are due at the meeting along with a membership fee of $18.  Cash or checks (made payable to GHS Key Club) will be accepted.  Please contact Mrs. Dillman if you have any questions.

 

SPORTS SCORES:

The boys tennis team won their NLC season opener by a score of 4-1 over Warsaw.  Three of the courts went three sets, and Simon Myers at 3 Singles and the 2 doubles pair of Diego Torres and Nathanael Wertz pulled out two of those matches.  Ryan Harmelink and Wyatt Fisher scored the only point for the JV in their doubles match.

The girls soccer team lost a tough battle with Warsaw last night 4-1.  Aniya Hartzler scored Goshen’s only goal on an assist from Anne Nisley.  Kassandra Rodriguez had a busy night in goal with nine saves for the RedHawks.  The JV team defeated Warsaw 3-0.  Joselyn Valderama scored two free kicks.  Martiza Ramos also scored for the RedHawks.

Junior student-athletes who have signed up for the Be the Best Leadership workshop today are to report directly to the auditorium to start your day.  Please be there with a writing utensil ready to go by 8:25 a.m. at the very latest.  Thank you!

The boys JV soccer team defeated Northridge 1-0.  Goshen goal scorer: Eduardo Rodriguez Goshen assists: Kevin Cruz

The Goshen JV football team lost to Elkhart Central, 51-0.  Thad Hershberger had an interception.  Hewitt Nafziger was the leading receiver.  Noah Shively was the leading tackler.

The Goshen Lady RedHawks battled Conference opponents, mosquitoes and illness Monday evening at Christiana Creek Country Club in Elkhart.  Short one girl before they left for this NLC match, three more were not able to finish due to illness.  Before the night was over, there were only four girls playing for Goshen.  Those four played well enough though for the Lady RedHawks to post their first victory of the season.  They beat Elkhart Memorial 243-244.  The girls were led by steady Olivia Thomas and her 53 followed by Grace Hernley’s 56 and Olivia Lehr’s 57.  They lost to Concord 190-243.

The girls varsity volleyball team defeated LaVille 3-0.

The girls JV volleyball team defeated LaVille 2-1.

 

IN SPORTS ACTION TODAY:

The boys JV and varsity tennis teams will play at Warsaw at 5:00 p.m.

The girls JV and varsity soccer teams play at Warsaw.  JV starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by varsity at 7:15 p.m.

The boys and girls JV and varsity cross country teams compete at Elkhart Memorial against Memorial and Northwood at 5:30 p.m.

The boys varsity soccer team defeated Northridge 2-1.  Goal Scorers: Lucas Bonteger and Marcos Hernandez, Assists: Lucas Bontreger

The girls soccer team lost a close battle with Northridge on Saturday.  Kassandra Rodriguez had six saves for the RedHawks.  The Northridge JV game was cancelled due to the early wet weather on Saturday.

The girls varsity volleyball team defeated Westview 2-0.

The girls varsity volleyball team placed 3rd in the Westview Invitational.  In pool play, they defeated Central Noble and Bremen and lost to Angola.  They defeated Westview to place 3rd in the tournament.

The boys tennis match against Lakeland was postponed due to lightning before the first point was played. The make-up date has been set for September 10th at 10:00 a.m.

The Freshman RedHawks suffered a tough loss to East Noble 13-7.  Leading players on offense were Kechemy Elias with 70 yards rushing.  Dominic Sosa had one passing touchdown.  Ethan Vallejo had one receiving touchdown.  Defensively for the RedHawks, Derric Miller and Dominic Sosa each had an interception.  The RedHawks had multiple sacks as a group.

The Goshen varsity RedHawks beat the Elkhart Central Blue Blazers, 35-28.

The boys tennis team pulled out another tight victory on back-to-back nights that was again much closer than the 4-1 score appears.  The varsity match included two tiebreakers, and Jacob Grewe at 1 Singles went three sets.  Hugh Birky, Simon Myers, Wes Beck, Mitchell Yoder and Ben Bontrager-Singer remain undefeated on the year, and Beck has only lost two games this entire week while winning 22.

 

IN SPORTS ACTION TODAY:

SPORTS SCORES:

The tennis team upped their win streak to four matches with a 4-1 win over Westview that was much closer than it sounds.  With the exception of Hugh Birky’s 2 & 0 win at 2 Singles, all the other varsity matches could have gone either way and required performances under pressure to pull out the win.  Jacob Grewe at 1 Singles overcame a 0-4 deficit in the 2nd set to win six straight games and close out the victory.  On the JV side, Wes Beck, Drake Crowder and Ben Bontrager-Singer each blanked their opponent.  Axel Brown and Braxton Kincaid at 3 JV doubles also beat the 1 doubles team.

It was a tough night for the Lady RedHawks at Maplecrest Country Club, their home course. They dropped two matches, losing to Plymouth and Northridge.  The Goshen Girls had a 250 while Plymouth shot 197 and Northridge posted a 203.  Olivia Thomas again led the team shooting a 56.

In their first home game of the season last night the Goshen girls soccer team remained undefeated with a 3-0 win over Mishawaka Marian.  Aylissa Trosper, Anne Nisley and Kyrah Fletcher scored for the Lady RedHawks.  Aniya Hartzler had a strong game in the midfield assisting on all three goals.  The stands where packed for a great game!  Thanks to everyone who came out to support the girls.  The JV team defeated Marian 1-0 on a goal by Jocelyn Valderama.

Plymouth Avenue Trail Crossing Update

Plymouth Avenue Trail Crossing Modification Update – Walsh & Kelly and HRP Construction are working to prepare the gravel base for the Plymouth Avenue/SR 119 roadway.  Plymouth Avenue/SR 119 is anticipated to be open to traffic by September 13, 2016.  The Indiana Department of Transportation, Elkhart County and the City of Goshen are working together to coordinate the timelines for closures on the various projects in and around the City of Goshen.  Plymouth Avenue/SR 119 will be re-opened to traffic prior to the closure of the Kercher Road/CR 38 Bridge on September 12, 2016.

Goshen/Elkhart Central-Football “Game of the Week”

The Goshen RedHawks varsity football team will be featured in the WHME (channel 46) Game of the Week, as they take on Elkhart Central on Friday, August 26th. If you can’t get to the game, which will be played at Elkhart Central, you can catch the game on WHME. It will air Friday evening, and again on Saturday morning.

Football’s Inaugural Game on New Turf

The 2016 RedHawks took the field on Friday night, ready to defend their brand new turf. They did it in style, taking the game by a score of 28-14. Dylan Back scored the first touchdown on the new field, but it was an overall team effort, with many players contributing to the victory.

Friday, August 19th was the Crimson Marching Band’s first opportunity to preview their new marching band show for the Goshen community, as they also celebrated the new artificial turf on Foreman Field.

Foreman Field Dedication

The new field turf on Foreman Field was formally dedicated on Friday night, August 19th.

It was a VERY busy summer for the Motz group, who installed the artificial turf. Through the efforts of the Motz group and many GCS staff members, the turf was finished TWO WEEKS ahead of schedule, so that students could play their first home football game at home. THANK YOU to all involved in making this beautiful field a reality for GHS.

The girls JV volleyball team defeated South Bend Riley 2-1.

The girls varsity volleyball team defeated South Bend Riley 3-0.

The boys varsity soccer team defeated Westview 4-0.  Goshen Goal Scorers: Manny Castillo (2), Lucas Bontreger and Junior Argueta.  Goshen Assists: Flavio Cruz, Marcos Hernandez, Ciro Agular and Juan Castaneda.

The boys JV soccer team defeated Westview 3-0.  Goshen Goal Scorers: Kevin Cruz, Cruz Garcia and Emylio Romo.  Goshen Assists: Emylio Romo and Eduardo Rodriguez.

SPORTS SCORES:

The boys JV football team beat Fairfield, 27-12.  Deven Love had two touchdown receptions. Jack Immel had two touchdown passes.  Liam Morales had a rushing touchdown.  Jack Immel had a rushing touchdown.  Austin Prince led the offensive line.  Defensive leaders were Ian Hochstetler and Noah Shively.  Taylor Meikle, Jesse Rhodes and Hewitt Nafziger had a fumble recovery.

The boys tennis team improved their winning streak to three matches with a 4-1 victory over Elkhart Central.  Simon Myers had his 2nd double bagel of the season at 3 singles.  Hugh Birky at 2 singles joins Myers as undefeated in the young season.  The JV improved to 2-0 behind wins from Wes Beck, Mitchell Yoder, Austin Peeler, Drake Crowder, Ben Bontrager-Singer, Wyatt Fisher, Braxton Kincaid and Josh Haimes.

The Lady RedHawks were back in action last night after a week lay-off due to weather.  They hosted Wawasee at Black Squirrel Golf Course.  Wawasee won the match 210-250.  Goshen was led with a 59 from Olivia Thomas, 60 from Olivia Lehr and a 62 from Katie Kercher.  Grace Hernley’s 69 and Sophia Chupp’s 71 rounded out the scoring for the Lady RedHawks.

The Goshen girls soccer team came out strong in their first NLC match of the season last night defeating Elkhart Memorial 6-1.  Aylissa Trosper had her second hat trick in a row to set the pace for the offense.  Freshmen twins Hailey and Regan Mast both scored their first varsity goals along with junior Noelia Calderon.  Priscila Flores, Aniya Hartzler, Hannah Kurtz and Maggie Gallagher assisted on the goals.  The JV team defeated Elkhart Memorial 10-0.  Jocelyn Guevara and Lauren Murphy each had hat tricks for the RedHawks.  Also scoring for Goshen were Mia Mayorga, Jocelyn Valderama and Joana Regalado.

SPORTS SCORES:

The Goshen RedHawks beat the Fairfield Falcons, 28-14, Friday night on Foreman Field.

The boys tennis team went 2-0 in the Goshen Round Robin that was suspended for rain before completion.  Goshen did not drop a set, 11 different players got varsity matches and the trio of Hugh Birky, Nathanael Wertz and Diego Torres each went 2-0 on the day.

The boys cross country team finished 3rd at the ECA Hokum-Karem.  Jason Barahona and Zach Oyer paced the RedHawks placing 8th, Sergei Culp and Irving Suarez 10th, Jonathon Snyder and Angel Arreola 11th and Brian Crain and Ben Sommers 15th.

The girls cross country team finished 4th at the ECA Hokum-Karem.  Kirsten Graves and Ariana Perez-Diener paced the RedHawks with 6th place, Brandi Smith and Yadira Sanchez 12th, Persis Wade and Julie Walton Clark 14th and Elena Meyer-Reimer and Hannah Scott 15th.

The girls varsity volleyball team lost to New Prairie 0-2 and to Hanover Central 0-2.  They defeated South Bend Clay 2-0 and Kankakee Valley 2-0.

SPORTS SCORES:

The girls varsity volleyball team defeated Westview 3-0.

The girls JV volleyball team lost to Westview 0-2.

The boys tennis team lost 2-3 to Bethany with both doubles matches losing in three sets.  The JV won 5-4, clinching it with a tiebreaker win from Anton Pham and Josh Haimes.  Hugh Birky and Simon Myers scored singles points for the varsity, while Wes Beck, Mitchell Yoder, Nathanael Wertz, Ben Bontrager-Singer and Austin Peeler contributed to the JV win.

The first game of the 2016 GHS girls soccer team season was a tale of two halves.  After falling behind by two goals in the first half, the Goshen girls had a strong second half defeating Elkhart Central 4-2.  Forward Aylissa Trosper started off her senior year with a hat trick to lead the Lady Redhawks comeback.  Aniya Hartzler and Noelia Calderon assisted on two of the goals.  The JV team defeated Elkhart Central 4-1.  Evelyn Santos, Joana Regalado, America Esparza and Mia Mayorga scored for Goshen.

 

IN SPORTS ACTION TODAY:

The boys varsity football team will host Fairfield tonight at 7:00 p.m.

On Saturday:

The boys/girls JV and varsity cross country teams will compete in the ECA Hokem Karem at 9:00 a.m.

Friday, August 19-Opening Night on Foreman Field

The Goshen RedHawks varsity football home opener will be on Friday, August 19th, when Goshen will host the neighboring Fairfield Falcons.  All JFL and 9th grade football players will be introduced starting at 6:30 p.m.; there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new field at 6:45 p.m.; and the Crimson Marching Band will take the field at 6:50 p.m. The marching band will also perform at halftime.

A commemorative program will be available at the ticket gate for the first 500 fans.

This year, all varsity football games will begin at 7:00 p.m., with gates opening at 6:00 p.m. Ticket prices are $6.00 for Kindergarten through Adult. Three ticket gates will be available for entry: One by the visiting bleachers off of Reynolds & 12th St.; one off of the alley east of Goshen High School, behind the home bleachers; and the main gate between Goshen High School and the public services building. In addition to normal parking spaces, parking is also available across the street from the high school in the bus compound and in the grass lot east of Foreman Field.

All-sport tickets and season football tickets will be available inside the main gate.  Ticket manager Janet Johns will be selling all-sport tickets for $90 and football season tickets for $30.

Mrs. Janet Johns will be honored at halftime as an inductee into the GHS Athletics Contributors Hall of Fame.  Janet has been the GHS Ticket Manager for 33 years, was the athletic secretary for 23 years, and was GHS’s first head softball coach, a position she held for 13 years.  In addition to these formal positions, Janet has been a volunteer at all 27 Goshen Girls Relays and the past 38 Goshen Boys Relays for track & field.  She has been the Assistant Meet Director of both relay events for the past 15 years and was Honorary Referee at the Girls Relays in 2010.

Come help the football team, marching band, and GCS staff celebrate the inaugural event at Foreman Field!

Students, if you are driving to school you must get a parking tag.  Officer Johnson will start checking vehicles next week.  Bring your license, current registration, current insurance and $5 to Mrs. Haney, the bookkeeper.  Again, you must get a new parking tag every year!

Pre-sale tickets will be available for the Goshen varsity football game vs. Fairfield, scheduled for Friday, August 19th.  Tickets will be available for purchase at both GHS and Fairfield High School through TODAY.  To purchase these tickets at GHS, please enter through Door C near the scrolling message center in the circle drive.  The price of the tickets is $6 and Athletic Department hours for ticket sales are Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Game day tickets will still be available for $6 at the ticket gates.  There will be three ticket gates available on that night at the following locations: on the visiting side at 12th/Reynolds, the main ticket gate south off of Purl St., and another off the alley just east of GHS and behind the home bleachers.  Lawn chairs are prohibited.

The Ultimate Frisbee Club meets after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45-5:00 p.m. on the administration field.  If you’re interested in learning how to play the sport of Ultimate Frisbee, you can pick up your required paperwork from Mr. Snyder in the choir office, Mr. Brubaker, Lucas Kauffman, or Mrs. Stealy in the main office.  The paperwork should be turned in to Lucas Kauffman the first time you attend.

Seniors:  You will meet in the auditorium TODAY during SRT for a drug education session and information about graduation.  You will report to your SRT first for attendance.

Juniors:  You will meet in the auditorium on Tuesday, August 23rd during the 1st session of SRT for a drug education session.  You will report to your SRT first for attendance.

Sophomores:  You will meet in the auditorium on Tuesday, August 23rd during the 2nd session of SRT for a drug education session.  You will report to your SRT first for attendance.

There will be a Key Club call out meeting on Tuesday, August 23rd during the 2nd session of SRT in the cafeteria.  If you are thinking about joining Key Club or would like to know more, plan to attend.  Students cannot be “signed out” for club or team meetings during SRT, so you will need to report to the meeting when the bell rings and attendance will be taken there.

The German Club will meet on Tuesday, August 30th during the 2nd session of SRT in Whiteman.

The first regular Key Club meeting will be on Thursday, September 1st in the cafeteria during the 2nd session of SRT.  This meeting is for current and new Key Club members.

The boys JV and varsity tennis teams will host Bethany at 4:30 p.m.

POSTPONED – The girls JV and varsity golf teams will compete at Elkhart Central at 4:30 p.m.

UPDATE:  The Goshen Girls soccer game versus Elkhart Central tonight has been moved to NIBCO fields.  The varsity game will now be played at 5:00pm followed by the JV at 7:00pm.  All girls soccer players need to be ready to leave at 3:45pm from the circle drive entrance.

The boys/girls JV and varsity cross country teams will host the Goshen Invitational at 5:30 p.m.

The girls JV and varsity volleyball teams will compete at Westview.  JV plays at 6:00 p.m., followed by varsity at 7:30 p.m.

The boys varsity soccer team will play at Blackhawk Christian at 6:30 p.m.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Picture retakes are on September 8th.

Today, Miss Rice, Mr. Lewis Caskey and Ms. Swartzendruber’s 5th period classes will take A lunch.

Boys Basketball will have open gym tomorrow after school in the main gym.  Boys not in a fall sport who have turned in their physical and participation forms to the athletic office are eligible to participate.  A complete fall workout schedule will be distributed at open gym.  See Coach Wohlford with any questions.

The class with the most students dressed according to the football theme on Friday during 7th period will earn free food (pizza or doughnuts) from Student Council!

Super Mileage Club will have a call out meeting on Tuesday, August 23rd at 3:40 p.m. in room 8010.  All interested students need to attend this meeting.

SPORTS SCORES:

The boys tennis team started the season strong by sweeping each varsity court in straight sets. Simon Myers debuted at 1 Singles with a double-bagel win.  Nathanael Wertz accomplished the same feat at 3 Singles.

The girls JV volleyball team lost to Bremen 2-4.

The girls varsity volleyball team defeated Bremen 3-1.
