Girls Tennis

The Goshen High School tennis program has made it possible for many girls to learn to play tennis, improve their tennis skills, and raise their sense of self worth. It has also provided opportunities for them to expand their circle of friends while having fun and experiencing a sense of achievement. Recent team achievements include 1998 State Finals for the Doubles Team, Conference and Sectional titles in 1999 and Sectional and Regional titles in 2000.

Success in tennis is based on how well one plays to her potential given a range of circumstances that include natural athletic ability, work ethic, experience, self confidence, mental toughness, and commitment to improve through practice both in and out of season. Winning is nice for the girls’ tennis team and individual wins may be a legitimate measure of success for some girls on the team, but for many, success is better measured in terms such as noticeable improvement in tennis skills, a better self image, or an increase in self confidence. Coaches expect athletes to do their best at all times, take responsibility, display good sportsmanship, and develop bonds with teammates through sharing joys and disappointments on and off the court. The GHS tennis coaches want players to have fun, and hope that a good portion of this fun is based on a sense of achievement on the court.

Tennis is a sport that can be played and enjoyed for many years – almost for the duration of a lifetime. High school is an excellent time to become a good tennis player, and the more skills one develops during high school the more the opportunities for enjoyment during school and thereafter.
